The first meeting of the Epidemiology and Animal Health Management Branch of the NZVA was on 23 July 1986 and was established to provide a technical contribution to the 1987 NZVA Conference. At this conference the first AGM was held.

The objectives set down at the July 1986 meeting were:

  1. To provide a means of communication among people who have a common interest in the use of and development of epidemiological methods and their applications to the practice of veterinary science to New Zealand.
  2. To make the wider veterinary community aware of improved ways in which the health of populations under their care can be managed, and to act as a centre of expertise in this field.
  3. To enhance the knowledge and skills of members, and hence to allow them to contribute fully to the care and management of animals and their products.
